No matter what situation you are in, you can view it in a negative way or a positive way. During these times when many people are cooped in their houses and not working, a lot of people are choosing a negative outlook. They can't leave the house, they are getting minimal social interaction, aren't doing anything productive, and aren't getting exercise. They feel frustrated, pent up, don't know what to do with themselves, or maybe even angry. Well welcome to the life of most dogs!
This quarantine can give us all a unique perspective into what every day life for a dog is like. We wake up, feed the dog, then the dog follows us around as we get ready to leave. We open the door and then lock them into the house. The dog doesn't understand why you get to go and why he has to stay. He doesn't understand why his instinctual needs for exercise and mental stimulation aren't being met. They just know that they woke up full of energy and ready to face the world, and then you left without them. It is important that we give dogs a job to do so that they don't start getting confused and acting out in frustration. Things we can do to help our dogs include taking them on walks, teaching them obedience commands and tricks, playing games with them like "find it" or fetch, or just having some fun and playing with them.
I personally am taking this time to get my property ready for board and trains. I am clearing out all the weeds, and putting up a six foot chain link fence around the land. And every day I am making a little more progress toward my goal of taking in dogs who are at their last chance. Rehabbing them and letting them have another shot at experiencing all the beauty in life.
My ranch will be a place where a dog can be dog. Where they can learn how to safely interact with the world, dogs, animals, and people. Where they will get enough physical exercise, mental stimulation and love so that they can start transforming their view of the world. And I can't wait!
I hope everyone stays healthy and happy during all this and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask!
